At the Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina 2026, there have been instances where medals are breaking or detaching from their ribbons.
Among those who faced this issue are American athletes Bri Johnson and Alyssa Liu, who received gold medals. Johnson, the champion in women's downhill skiing, showcased her medal at a press conference where the ribbon detached due to a faulty attachment. Similarly, Liu shared a video on social media showing her medal disconnecting during the team event in figure skating.
The German biathlon team also encountered a similar situation: a video shows one athlete's medal slipping off the ribbon during a celebration at the hotel.
Representatives of the Olympic organizers confirmed that they are currently investigating the causes of these problems, despite the fact that the gold medals of 2026 hold unprecedented value.
