Low Rates Encourage Long-Term Parking of Cars
According to information from Kubanychbek Imanaliev, a parking specialist, the introduction of hourly parking fees in Bishkek may encourage drivers to use public transport. He shared this during a broadcast on "Birinchi Radio".
In his opinion, the affordable rates, which are around 25 soms per day, lead motorists to leave their cars for extended periods—weeks and even months.
“If the city council approves the new hourly payment system, it will become unprofitable to leave cars parked. It is planned to charge between 30 to 50 soms for the first two hours, and then 20 soms for each subsequent portion of time. As a result, many may switch to public transport or use bicycles and scooters in the summer. There are plenty of alternatives. This should significantly reduce traffic on the roads,” noted Imanaliev.
It is worth mentioning that the city hall has already proposed to divide the city into zones with different parking costs.
