According to the report by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) titled Kyrgyz Republic Country Brief, March 2026, about 26% of the population of Kyrgyzstan lives below the poverty line.

The study shows that over 41% of the country's citizens cannot afford a full meal, and 75% resort to negative survival strategies, such as taking loans or cutting back on medical expenses.

The most critical situation is observed in the Batken region, where the poverty rate exceeds 40%.

The problem of malnutrition also remains serious: anemia has been identified in 21% of children under five years old.

Despite significant economic growth, food security in the country remains at risk. The main reasons for this situation include dependence on remittances from migrants, low self-sufficiency in agriculture, rising prices for food and fuel, as well as climate risks.

The report emphasizes that Kyrgyzstan, where 93% of the territory is occupied by mountains, is susceptible to various natural threats, including mudflows.
