On Alabakova Street, 155 (165) in Karakol, located in the Issyk-Kul region, there is a historic building, the city administration reported.

According to information, this structure dates back to the period from 1918 to 1920. "This building plays a significant role in the history of Karakol (formerly known as Przhevalsk). In 1918-1919, it housed the Extraordinary Commission of the Przhevalsk District, established to combat counter-revolution in the context of the Civil War, immediately after the establishment of Soviet power in the region. At that time, Extraordinary Commissions (Cheka) played an important role in ensuring internal security and countering sabotage, counter-revolution, and other threats to the young Soviet state. The activities of the Cheka in Przhevalsk illustrate a complex and pivotal historical stage when the region experienced sharp socio-political changes caused by the fall of the Russian Empire and the establishment of Soviet power," the statement said.

It is believed that the building on Alabakova Street, 155 (possibly with a different name at the time) was chosen for the commission's location due to its convenient location and sturdy construction. It may be one of the old brick merchant or administrative buildings capable of accommodating staff and providing the necessary conditions for paperwork and interrogations.

In the following decades, the building changed its purpose, like many other constructions from the pre-revolutionary and early Soviet periods. It was used for housing, as well as for various institutions and organizations. Nevertheless, the building retains its historical significance as an important site linked to the revolutionary and post-revolutionary past of Karakol.

Today, this house stands as a silent witness to the tumultuous era of the early 20th century and can be considered a local historical heritage site," the city administration emphasized.

This building is included in the list of architectural monuments of regional significance. It has a protected zone where any new construction that could alter the historical appearance of the territory is prohibited, and approvals are required for carrying out repair and restoration work.
