"We have leased a plot underground for the first time"
In an interview with local media, Bishkek Mayor Aibek Junushaliev spoke about the construction of an underground shopping complex and a three-story building located on Chuy Avenue, near the Central Department Store (CDS), and discussed the disputes that have arisen around this project.
According to Junushaliev, this project is unique for the capital: "We have leased a plot underground for the first time, which was put up for auction. Its cost reached 7 million soms per year. The project is estimated at about 2 billion soms. Implementing such projects is a complex task. I hope they will complete the work within three months," the mayor noted.
He also emphasized that the construction of the building opposite the clock tower is not taking place on municipal land. As a result, this third floor did not receive due attention, but after public criticism, old sketches were raised for comparison with the current work.
It is important to note that the new building is being constructed on the site where flower alleys and kiosks used to be. The "Old Bishkek" project has sparked mixed opinions among residents, as its implementation differs from the initial proposals of the city hall and builders. The situation has been taken up by the chairman of the State National Security Committee, Kamchybek Tashiev, who ordered the demolition of the third floor.
Initially, the authorities planned to create an underground passage from the southeast side of the CDS to reduce traffic jams on Chuy Avenue caused by pedestrians. However, it later became clear that in addition to the underground shopping complex, the construction of above-ground facilities had also begun.
