The President has appealed to the Constitutional Court of the Kyrgyz Republic for an official interpretation of the Constitution

The request concerns the terms of office of the president and the procedure for conducting elections

The President of the Kyrgyz Republic has submitted a request to the Constitutional Court asking for an official interpretation of certain provisions of the Constitution. In particular, it concerns the rules regarding the terms of office of the current president and the procedure for appointing both regular and early elections, the press service of the head of state reports.

The need for clarification arose due to differing opinions in public-political and expert circles regarding the interpretation of these norms of the Fundamental Law.

In order to prevent political conflicts, undermine trust in government institutions, and eliminate disputes and risks, the president has requested an official interpretation of Article 67, the second paragraph of Part 2 of Article 68, and Part 1 of Article 72 of the Constitution, the text of which was updated on May 5, 2021. These articles should be considered in the context of the norms of the 2010 Constitution and the provisions of the Law "On the Constitution of the Kyrgyz Republic," adopted in a referendum on April 11, 2021. The request also addresses the procedure and timelines for conducting presidential elections.

The consideration of the request is scheduled for February 17. The Constitutional Court will conduct it as a priority through a written procedure.
