At the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic, Edil Baisalov, proposed appointing a woman to the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations. This information was provided by the government press service.
Edil Baisalov emphasized the importance of protecting women's rights and Kyrgyzstan's commitment to fulfilling international obligations enshrined in the Beijing Declaration and the 2030 Agenda. He highlighted that the country is actively expanding opportunities for women and fighting against violence.
Kyrgyzstan adheres to a zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women and is constantly working to improve mechanisms for their protection.
“The world cannot seriously discuss women's rights while ignoring their suffering in conflict zones. Protecting women must be a key aspect of international security,” stated Edil Baisalov.
He also emphasized that the United Nations must set an example in matters of equality. In his opinion, nearly eighty years after its establishment, it is time for a woman to lead the UN as Secretary-General.
