The court found the former president guilty of abuse of power and incitement to rebellion. The prosecution insisted on the death penalty for Yoon Suk-yeol, who has been in custody since his arrest and does not admit his guilt. He claims that he acted within his authority, trying to draw attention to the obstruction of government operations by the opposition. The convicted man's lawyer stated that he plans to discuss the possibility of appealing the decision with him, describing the court's ruling as unfounded.
The attempt to impose martial law in December 2024 failed due to resistance from parliament, which led to Yoon Suk-yeol's removal from office and caused a serious socio-political crisis in the country.
A total of eight criminal cases were initiated against the former president. Earlier, in January 2026, the same court had already sentenced him to five years in prison on other charges. At that time, Yoon Suk-yeol was found guilty of using presidential security to obstruct the execution of a court order for arrest, as well as forgery of official documents and violation of legal procedures for imposing martial law.
