The court proceedings concerned the actions of Yoon Suk-yeol, who attempted to declare martial law in the country in early December 2024. He justified this decision by the need to combat "anti-state forces supporting North Korea." However, the state of martial law lasted only a few hours before being revoked by parliament, which soon voted for the impeachment of the president. Yoon Suk-yeol was removed from office and subsequently arrested.

The court also found Yoon Suk-yeol guilty of violating the legal procedures required for the imposition of martial law.

According to information from the Renhap agency, the prosecution requested a ten-year prison sentence for the former president. Yoon Suk-yeol did not admit his guilt.

The sentence has not yet come into legal force and can be appealed.

As Renhap reminds, Yoon Suk-yeol is facing eight criminal cases related to his attempt to impose martial law. The case regarding obstruction of arrest was the first to receive a final verdict.

Additionally, Yoon Suk-yeol is accused of attempting to usurp power, and in this case, the prosecution has requested the maximum penalty — the death penalty. The final decision on this case is expected on February 19.
