Former Prime Minister of Georgia Garibashvili received five years in prison

The court found him guilty of illegal enrichment

Irakli Garibashvili, who previously served as the Prime Minister of Georgia, was convicted of illegal enrichment and sentenced to five years in prison. According to information provided by the Prosecutor General's Office of Georgia and published by DW, the former prime minister agreed to a plea deal with the prosecution and admitted his guilt.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court also imposed a fine of 1 million lari (about 319,000 euros) on Garibashvili. He will be required to return funds that were seized during a search of his residence, as well as those obtained illegally. The prosecutor's statement emphasizes that Garibashvili fully acknowledges his guilt and agrees to the terms of the deal.

Garibashvili served as Prime Minister from 2013 to 2015 and again from February 2021 to January 2024. He was also Minister of Defense from 2019 to 2021. After his resignation in early 2024, he headed the "Georgian Dream" party.

In October 2025, he was charged with large-scale money laundering. According to RBC, the investigation established that while holding high government positions, Garibashvili conducted business and received income, which he then laundered through fictitious transactions and property registered in the names of his family members.
