Russia and France exchanged prisoners
A recent event in international relations: Russia and France conducted a prisoner exchange. As a result of this exchange, French scholar Laurent Vignatier, recognized as a foreign agent in Russia, was set free, while Russian basketball player Daniil Kasatkin was sent to France.

Kasatkin had been under arrest in France since June 2025. His detention was initiated at the request of the United States, where he is suspected of cyber fraud. According to American authorities, the athlete participated in ransom negotiations; however, he categorically denies all accusations. Kasatkin's lawyer reported that French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu did not sign the document for his extradition to the U.S., despite the court's decision.

Under the terms of the exchange, Russia released Laurent Vignatier, who was detained in 2024. He was sentenced to three years in prison for violating the foreign agent law, as he was accused of gathering information on military activities in Russia by meeting with various sources. Vignatier pleaded guilty in court, expressed remorse, and asked for forgiveness. Before his release, the President of Russia issued a decree for clemency.
