Strangulation with shoelaces and the escape of two classmates: The case of the taxi driver's murder in Balıkçı

The panel of the Issyk-Kul Regional Court rejected the appeal of J. K., who, along with his classmate K. M., is accused of murdering a taxi driver in Balakchy in July 2025. The initial court decision was reviewed on December 11, 2025, but the sentence remained the same: J. K. was sentenced to 20 years in prison.



According to the investigation, on July 2, 2025, J. K. (name changed - Kalymurat) and his classmate K. M. decided to make quick money and devised a plan in which they stopped a taxi driven by an elderly driver. At 5:00 PM, they directed the 64-year-old driver B. Sh. to the "Apricot" dacha, stating that a third party would pay the fare of 500 soms and asked him to wait. Around 5:45 PM, when B. Sh. got out of the car to smoke, Kalymurat attacked him from behind, starting to choke him. At the same time, K. M. held the driver's legs. When the driver lost consciousness, the young men decided to leave the scene but noticed that B. Sh. was starting to come to. Kalymurat then approached the taxi driver again and began to choke him with shoelaces. Ensuring that B. Sh. was dead, they dragged him into the bushes and, getting into the taxi, drove towards Karakol. Kalymurat was driving. On the way, they took B. Sh.'s phone and 2600 soms, refueled the car for 1500 soms, and bought drinks and cigarettes with the remaining 900 soms. However, they were stopped by traffic police inspectors from the Tyup district due to the lack of necessary documents. The car was sent to the impound lot, and the young men fled to Karakol, where they disposed of the documents and keys to the car in the trash. They sold the taxi driver's phone, worth 8000 soms, at the market for 1000 soms.



According to the forensic examination, the cause of death of the taxi driver was asphyxiation.

As a result of the appellate proceedings, Kalymurat was ultimately sentenced to 20 years in prison with confiscation of property in a general regime colony. The sentence came into legal force upon its announcement.

The party dissatisfied with the verdict has the right to file a cassation appeal or representation to the Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic.
In July of last year, Turmush reported on the detention of suspects in the murder of a taxi driver in Balakchy.
According to the police, on July 3, the Balakchy police department received information from a 22-year-old local resident Sh. Ch. She reported that her father, 64-year-old B. Sh., who worked as a taxi driver in his own "Mercedes-Benz," went missing on July 2 around 5:00 PM, and his mobile phone was turned off.
During operational search activities on July 4, the body of B. Sh., born in 1961, was found in the dacha settlement "Apricot," located in the northern part of Balakchy, showing signs of violent death – he had been strangled with a shoelace from sports shoes.
The fact was registered in the Unified Register of the Balakchy police department, and a criminal case was initiated under Article 122 ("Murder") of the Criminal Code.
On July 6, two suspects were detained – K. M., born in 1996, a resident of Balakchy, and J. K., born in 1994, a resident of Cholpon-Ata. The Balakchy City Court chose a preventive measure in the form of detention for two months.
The panel of the regional court noted that for two episodes of theft of money, documents, and a mobile phone from the house and car in Balakchy, which were also attributed to Kalymurat, there was no evidence, therefore he was acquitted on these charges. The materials of the case have been sent to the prosecutor to identify the real culprits.
