On January 5, a court hearing took place in New York, where Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, detained by American forces during a military operation, declared their innocence, as reported by DW citing international news agencies.

Maduro, who calls himself a "prisoner of war," said: "I am innocent. I am an honorable man and still the president of my country," according to information from the Associated Press.

At the hearing, the former president and his wife were dressed in prison clothes and used headphones for translation. Despite the absence of handcuffs, their legs were shackled. Flores, calling herself the First Lady of Venezuela, also declared her innocence.

The next hearing is scheduled for March 17, while Maduro and his wife will remain in custody in New York. It is expected that their lawyers will challenge the legality of the arrest, citing Maduro's immunity as a sovereign leader, while U.S. authorities do not recognize him as the president of Venezuela.

According to Bloomberg, judicial proceedings in Maduro's case may not begin until 2027. At the initial stage, the judge must establish a schedule for the exchange of evidence and motions.

As reported by CBS News, Maduro's lawyer at the first hearing was Barry Pollack, who previously represented Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks. Cilia Flores was represented by Texas attorney Mark Donnelly. At the hearing, the couple's lawyers noted that at this time their clients do not plan to request bail, but it is possible that they will file such motions later.

Recall that on January 3, Nicolas Maduro and Cilia Flores were captured by U.S. Delta Force during Operation "Absolute Resolve" and were first taken to a U.S. Navy base in Guantanamo and then to New York.

Maduro is accused of "narcoterrorism," illegal possession of weapons, and trafficking Venezuelan diplomatic passports. According to U.S. authorities, he led a criminal organization known as Cartel de los Soles, previously declared a terrorist group, and, along with his wife, son, and associates, was involved in a conspiracy with Colombian groups engaged in the production and trafficking of cocaine. Maduro has rejected these accusations, claiming they serve as a cover for access to Venezuela's oil reserves.

After Maduro's capture, the Supreme Court of Venezuela appointed Vice President Delcy Rodriguez as the interim head of state, who reported Caracas's desire for "the development of balanced and respectful international relations," including with the U.S. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, in turn, warned Rodriguez of the consequences if she does not cooperate with U.S. authorities, noting that "it could cost her more than Maduro," according to The Atlantic.
