On January 4, Donald Trump made a loud statement, noting that the United States could take action not only against Venezuela but also against other countries. He mentioned Colombia and its president, and described Cuba as a "ready trap." Trump also confirmed his ambitions to acquire Greenland, as reported by The New York Times.

On the same day, Trump reported that Nicolás Maduro and his wife had been detained and had left the country. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau added that Maduro would be brought to justice in the U.S.
