On Saturday night, around 2:00 AM local time, residents of the city witnessed loud explosions and the sounds of low-flying planes, reported AP, AFP reporters, and witnesses who confirmed the information for Reuters.
Eyewitnesses stated that explosions were heard in several areas, and flashes were visible from a considerable distance. In the southern part of the city, near a major military base, there was a power outage. So far, Venezuelan officials have not commented on the situation.
These events unfold against the backdrop of recent threats from US President Donald Trump, who announced the deployment of a naval group in the Caribbean Sea and hinted at the possibility of strikes against Venezuela.
In early September 2025, Trump sent eight military ships to the southern Caribbean Sea, explaining this as part of his fight against drug trafficking. The President of Venezuela characterized the actions of the US as a "hostile siege" and appealed to the UN for assistance in "protecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country." In response, Trump stated that a Venezuelan drug boat had been sunk by American military forces in the Caribbean Sea and ordered the cessation of all diplomatic relations with Venezuela. He also stated that the US would continue attacks on drug traffickers abroad without Congressional approval.
