“The US President wanted to raise these issues before his meeting with Zelensky, which will take place later at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. At the beginning of the conversation, which lasted 1 hour and 15 minutes, the presidents exchanged greetings for the upcoming Christmas and New Year, wishing happiness to the peoples of their countries,” Ushakov said.
He also noted that the subsequent discussion took place in a friendly and constructive atmosphere, with both sides interested in moving towards a peaceful and lasting resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.
According to Ushakov, Trump listened carefully to the Russian perspective on the possibilities of reaching an agreement.
“Our president detailed the importance of continuing work based on previously reached Russian-American agreements, which were formalized at the summit in Anchorage and during numerous meetings of officials from both countries,” he added.
Ushakov emphasized that both presidents agree that the proposed option for a temporary ceasefire, put forward by the Ukrainian and European side, will only prolong the conflict and may lead to a resumption of hostilities.
Additionally, Trump expressed confidence that it is necessary to end military actions as soon as possible, mentioning the prospects for economic cooperation between the US, Russia, and Ukraine, acknowledging that the crisis in Ukraine has become his most challenging test.
“It is important to note that during the discussion, the President of Russia agreed to the American side's proposal to create two working groups to address the situation around Ukraine. One group will focus on security issues, while the other will address economic aspects. Putin and Trump agreed to reconnect by phone following the US President's meeting with the Ukrainian team, which will take place this evening,” summarized the assistant to the President of Russia.
