U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he intends to have a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the near future and expressed confidence that the negotiations will go well.
As reported by The Independent, Trump made this statement in an interview with Politico. According to the White House chief, the conversation with the Russian leader could take place at any time convenient for him.
“I think everything will be fine. I think things will go well with Putin,” Trump said, commenting on the upcoming negotiations.
The publication also notes that the American president reiterated his key influence on the negotiation process between Kyiv and Moscow. According to him, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will not be able to take any steps without approval from the U.S.
“He has nothing until I approve it. So let’s see what he has,” Trump stated.
It was previously reported that Zelensky and Trump plan to meet on Sunday, December 28, in Florida. The Ukrainian president stated that he intends to discuss security guarantees for Kyiv, territorial issues, and economic development with the White House chief, noting that “a lot can be resolved before the New Year.”
Additionally, Zelensky emphasized that a final peace treaty cannot be signed without agreement from all parties involved in the negotiations - Ukraine, the U.S., Russia, and the European Union. In an interview with Axios, he also mentioned that Kyiv is ready to hold a referendum on the U.S. peace plan, provided that Russia agrees to a ceasefire for 60 days.
