The UN expressed concern over the situation in Venezuela and the detention of Maduro

On January 3, a sharp escalation of the conflict occurred: American troops struck targets in Venezuela, resulting in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. On the same day, Maduro was taken to a detention center in Brooklyn.

The UN spokesperson emphasized that such events create a dangerous precedent, despite the situation in Venezuela. The Secretary-General insists on the necessity of strict adherence to international law by all parties, including the UN Charter, which raises his serious concern.

Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, highlighted the importance of protecting the citizens of Venezuela.

“The protection of the Venezuelan population must be a priority and the basis for any further actions,” he noted.

Analyzing the current events, Annalena Baerbock, the President of the UN General Assembly, emphasized that in times of crisis, the UN Charter should guide actions, which states that member states must refrain from threats and the use of force against the sovereignty and political independence of other countries.

Experts from the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela expressed serious concern about the human rights situation in the country following the US attacks and Maduro's arrest. They called on both the authorities of the two countries and the international community to ensure strict compliance with international law.

“A long history of serious human rights violations by the Maduro government cannot justify US military intervention that violates international law. At the same time, the illegality of the US attack does not diminish the responsibility of Venezuelan officials, including Maduro, for years of repression and violence,” commented mission expert Alex Nev.
