The USA strikes Venezuela. Official Caracas declared military aggression

According to information provided by American sources to CBS News, U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered attacks on military facilities in Venezuela.

According to The New York Times: In Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, eyewitnesses report seeing plumes of smoke over military sites, including La Carlota airbase and Fuerte Tiuna base. A representative of the U.S. armed forces in Washington confirmed reports of explosions in the capital but did not comment on possible U.S. involvement.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a NOTAM prohibiting all flights over Venezuela starting at 6:00 AM on January 3, 2026, effectively closing the country's airspace. This measure indicates a heightened state of alert in light of the ongoing events.
According to El Tiempo: Explosions are heard in various areas of Caracas, and power outages are also reported. Images of explosions in the capital are appearing on social media, including reports of detonations at the main military base Fuerte Tiuna and La Carlota airbase.

The Venezuelan authorities have classified these actions as military aggression by the U.S., claiming that facilities in Caracas, as well as in the states of Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira, were attacked. President Nicolás Maduro has signed a decree declaring a state of emergency.

The head of the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ivan Gil Pinto, confirmed that the actions of the U.S. represent direct military aggression.

According to CBS News: Trump authorized ground strikes against Venezuela a few days before they took place. Sources report that the military discussed the possibility of a strike on Christmas, but priority was given to attacks on ISIS targets in Nigeria. In the following days, new opportunities for strikes arose, but the operation was postponed due to adverse weather conditions, as insisted by the Pentagon.

According to Sky News Arabia, the home of the Venezuelan Minister of Defense, located within the Fuerte Tiuna military complex, was attacked in Caracas. The strike hit a residential building, and information about the minister's condition is currently unavailable.

There are also reports of attacks on civilian and military facilities in Caracas and neighboring states, with Venezuelan authorities promising retaliatory actions and accusing the U.S. of attempting to effect regime change. A government statement reads: "The entire country must unite to counter this imperialist aggression," and the issue of convening the UN Security Council is also raised.

The Cuban president condemned the strikes on Venezuela, calling them "a criminal attack by the U.S." Miguel Díaz-Canel calls on the international community to urgently condemn actions he characterized as "state terrorism against the brave Venezuelan people and all of America."

Nicolás Maduro announced the declaration of a state of emergency and described the attacks as an attempt by the U.S. to seize the country's natural resources. In his statement, he emphasizes that the strikes are aimed at "capturing Venezuela's strategic resources, including oil and minerals," as well as "violently suppressing the political independence of the country." Maduro signed a decree introducing a regime of external disorder throughout the country.

Additionally, he ordered the implementation of all national defense plans "in due time and under appropriate conditions." The government has called on all social and political forces to intensify mobilization and condemn this imperialist attack.

Maduro's whereabouts are currently unknown; however, according to several sources, his entourage is likely safe, reports the NYT.
