As reported by CNN, the couple was evacuated with the help of the American aircraft carrier "Iwo Jima." On the evening of January 3, they were flown to Stewart Air Force Base by an FBI plane. They were then transported by helicopter to the headquarters of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Manhattan, where they underwent biometric data collection. After that, Maduro and Flores were placed in a detention center in Brooklyn.

In a video released by the White House, Maduro, handcuffed, can be seen walking down a corridor accompanied by DEA agents. He greets viewers in English: "Good evening. Happy New Year."

According to NBC News, Maduro and Flores could appear in court in New York as early as January 5.

It was previously reported that a U.S. military operation took place in Venezuela on the night of January 3, during which President Maduro and his wife were captured and taken out of the country. The U.S. Department of Justice has filed charges against them for conspiracy to commit "narcoterrorism," as well as for the illegal importation of cocaine and possession of weapons and explosives with the intent to use them against the United States.

U.S. President Donald Trump had previously stated the intention of the United States to control the situation in Venezuela until a lawful transfer of power occurs in the country.
