In 2025, courts in Russia set a new record for the number of life sentences imposed. From January to November of last year, 100 people were sentenced to this harsh punishment, according to human rights activists.

Experts point out that the increase in the number of life sentences is related to the expansion of the list of crimes for which such a punishment can be imposed.

This is the highest figure in the last two decades. Previously, the largest number of individuals sentenced to life imprisonment was recorded in 2005 and 2012, when 84 people were sentenced each year. Since 2005, life sentences have been imposed in Russia 1,316 times.

In recent years, the list of crimes for which a life sentence can be imposed has significantly increased. In particular, individuals can now be sentenced to such punishment for treason, organizing terrorist acts, and involving minors in sabotage activities.
