The President of France stated that 'the USA is gradually turning away from its allies'

On Wednesday, Donald Trump, the President of the United States, mocked French leader Emmanuel Macron, claiming that he allegedly agreed to a threefold increase in drug prices under pressure from Trump.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, Macron expressed his concern, stating that the USA is "moving away from international norms" and gradually "turning away" from its allies, as reported by Euronews. He noted that "multilateral institutions are functioning worse and worse," adding that the world has become a playground for great powers seeking to divide it.

The French president also condemned "new colonialism" and "imperialism," as well as a "strategy of defeatism," emphasizing the need for "reinvestment in the UN" to counter modern threats.

These comments were a response to a series of sharp statements from the Trump administration that have raised alarm among traditional US allies. Particularly concerning were Trump's remarks about a possible annexation of Greenland—the largest island, which belongs to Denmark.

Trump has long considered the possibility of turning Greenland into the "51st state of the USA," pointing to its strategic importance for the country's security.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that next week he will hold talks with Danish officials regarding the Trump administration's intention to "acquire" Greenland.

This week, the White House did not rule out the possibility of using military force to seize the island in the North Atlantic.

Leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the UK expressed support for Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, confirming that the resource-rich island belongs to the people of Greenland.

Macron also expressed doubts that the USA would actually resort to military intervention in Denmark. "I cannot imagine a situation in which America would violate Denmark's sovereignty," he stated in an interview with France 2, adding that Greenland remains under Danish sovereignty.

Frederiksen noted that an attempt to annex Greenland could lead to the collapse of NATO, stating that a military attack on a NATO country would mean the end of the alliance and the security system that has existed since World War II.

"Donald, we have a deal"

Additional actions from Washington have also raised concerns among European partners, including the Trump administration's decision to suspend US participation in the activities of numerous UN agencies and international organizations, which they believe promote "Buddhist" initiatives.

The USA has also seized oil tankers linked to Venezuela and removed them from the country of Nicolás Maduro on charges of drug terrorism.

On Wednesday evening, Trump again mocked Macron in front of Republican lawmakers, ironically recounting how he supposedly forced the French president to agree to raise drug prices by threatening to increase tariffs on French imports.

According to Trump, he asked Macron to raise the prices of prescription drugs, claiming that Americans pay 14 times more than the French. Macron reportedly initially refused, to which Trump allegedly issued an ultimatum: either agree to the increase or face 25% tariffs on French products.

"Donald, we have a deal. I'm ready to raise drug prices by 200% or whatever. Please, don't tell the public about this," Trump humorously repeated Macron's words.

So far, neither Macron nor the French government has commented on this situation.
