Protests in Iran have escalated. The US has stated possible intervention

Mass protests continue in Iran, triggered by rising prices and deteriorating living conditions. The demonstrations, which have spread across major cities and have been ongoing for a long time, demand the resignation of the country's supreme leader. Reports indicate at least six fatalities. US President Donald Trump, whose policy is aimed against the Iranian regime, stated that Washington may intervene if authorities begin to use violence against the protesters.

The situation began to escalate after a sharp decline in the national currency—the Iranian rial—occurred at the end of last year, leading to hyperinflation. The exchange rate of the dollar on the black market reached 1.4 million rials, while the official rate set by the Central Bank is significantly undervalued. Amid the economic crisis, the head of the Central Bank resigned, and traders took to the streets of Tehran and other cities, joined by residents.

According to official data, inflation in the country increased by 42% in December compared to the same period last year. Prices for medicines and medical supplies rose by about 50%, while food prices increased by 70%.

The Fars news agency reported six casualties among protesters due to clashes with the police, while state media mention injuries among security forces, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Protesters are raising both economic and political slogans. One of the most famous is "Neither Gaza nor Lebanon, my life is for Iran," highlighting the high cost of foreign policy for Iranians. According to the US State Department, Iran allocates hundreds of millions of dollars to support the terrorist organization Hamas. Additionally, The Wall Street Journal reports that Tehran helped train militants who carried out attacks and mass killings on October 7, 2023.

These protests have become the largest in the country in the last three years. In 2022, unrest began after the death of Mahsa Amini, who died after being detained for violating hijab rules.

Donald Trump expressed readiness to intervene if violence against peaceful protesters continues.

The US President noted that Washington could support Iranian protesters if authorities open fire on them. Trump has been actively opposing Iran, and in June 2025, the US struck facilities related to the country's nuclear program.

Iranian authorities accused the US of inciting protests. Ali Larijani, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, condemned Trump's remarks, stating that US intervention in Iran's internal affairs would cause chaos in the region and contradict US interests. An advisor to Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei also warned of possible "retaliatory measures" in the event of intervention.
