The largest robbery in the history of Germany: up to 90 million euros stolen

The robbers opened about 3,200 bank vaults

In the city of Gelsenkirchen, located in western Germany, criminals drilled a hole in the wall of a bank vault, gaining access to 3,200 safe deposit boxes. As a result of the robbery, the damage could amount to up to 90 million euros, making this incident one of the largest in the history of bank thefts in the country, reports DW.

According to local police, the robbery occurred at a Sparkasse bank branch. The criminals created a passage in the concrete wall between the room with the vaults and a nearby parking lot, which became known on December 30.

According to law enforcement data, several thousand safes were opened, and the damage is estimated in the tens of millions of euros. Witnesses reported seeing a group of men with large bags in a multi-story parking garage on the evening of December 28.

Surveillance cameras recorded a black Audi RS 6 leaving the parking lot on the morning of December 29. Inside the vehicle were masked individuals, and the license plates had been stolen earlier in Hanover. Police described the robbers' actions as "very professional."

According to the dpa agency, investigators report that the criminals stole cash, gold, and jewelry worth about 30 million euros, while assessing the total damage is difficult since the contents of the vaults were often unknown.

The Associated Press, citing the Gelsenkirchen police, reports that the total amount of damage ranges from 10 to 90 million euros, making this robbery one of the most significant in the history of Germany.

Representatives of Sparkasse bank noted that each safe was insured for up to 10,300 euros. However, on December 29 and 30, many dissatisfied customers gathered outside the bank building, many of whom claimed that their losses significantly exceeded the insurance payouts. About 2,700 people were affected.
