The robbery took place during the Christmas holidays
During the Christmas holidays, when the bank was closed, robbers broke into the underground vault of the Sparkasse branch in Gelsenkirchen (North Rhine-Westphalia). They used a drill to make a hole in the concrete wall from a neighboring parking lot, thus gaining access to the vault, which contained over 3,000 safe deposit boxes.
According to information from the police and local media, the criminals managed to open most of the boxes, affecting about 2,700 bank clients who had their valuables stolen.
The amount of damage varies across different sources. Some estimates suggest that the robbers made off with around 30 million euros in cash, gold, and other valuables, while other reports mention a possible insurance loss of up to 33.9 million euros. The exact value of the stolen property is currently being clarified.
