In the western German city of Gelsenkirchen, a robbery occurred at the Sparkasse bank. The criminals drilled a hole in the concrete wall connecting the bank's vault and the parking lot, as reported by DW based on information from local police.

According to law enforcement, several thousand safe deposit boxes were broken into, with total damages amounting to tens of millions of euros. Witnesses claim they saw men with large bags on the staircase of the multi-story parking garage on December 28.

Surveillance footage showed that on December 29, a black Audi RS 6 left the parking lot, with people inside wearing masks. The vehicle's license plates had previously been stolen in Hanover. The police described the robbers' actions as "very professional."

According to the dpa agency, investigators report that about 3,200 safe deposit boxes were broken into, with cash, gold, and jewelry stolen amounting to approximately 30 million euros. It is difficult to provide an exact assessment of the damages, as the contents of the boxes often remained a mystery.

The Associated Press, citing the Gelsenkirchen police, reports that the total amount of damages could range from 10 to 90 million euros. This robbery is already being called one of the largest in Germany's history.

Representatives of Sparkasse noted that each safe deposit box was insured for up to 10,300 euros. However, on December 29 and 30, many dissatisfied customers gathered outside the bank building, many of whom stated that their losses significantly exceeded the insurance payouts. A total of about 2,700 people were affected.
