The Wall Street Journal: Russia has sent a submarine to escort an oil tanker pursued by the US

Recently, the vessel Bella 1 was renamed Marinera
Russia has sent a submarine and "other naval forces" to escort the oil tanker Bella 1, which is being pursued by the US Coast Guard in the Atlantic Ocean. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing an American official.

Currently, the tanker, according to the Automatic Identification System (AIS), is located approximately 300 miles south of Iceland.

According to sources from CBS News, the US intends to intercept this vessel. The channel notes that it is still unclear whether the plans of the American Coast Guard have changed after Russian naval forces began to protect the tanker.

On December 20, the US Coast Guard attempted to detain the Panama-flagged tanker Bella 1 in the Caribbean Sea as it was heading to Venezuela. The vessel was on the sanctions list for transporting Iranian oil, and according to The Wall Street Journal, it is currently empty.

The crew, consisting of citizens from Russia, Ukraine, and India, refused to comply with the US Coast Guard's demands, changing course, which led to the start of a pursuit by American military forces. In an attempt to evade capture, the crew members painted the Russian flag on the side of the tanker. Later, a few days after the incident, the vessel was renamed Marinera and registered with the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping.

According to The New York Times, Russian authorities sent an official diplomatic note to the US demanding the cessation of the tanker’s pursuit. This request was submitted to the State Department and the National Security Council of the White House late on December 31, however, the US continued its actions to pursue the vessel.
