As a result of recent modifications, an average cargo ship from China has been transformed into a combat platform for modern strike drones. A modular electromagnetic catapult (EMALS) has been installed on its deck, designed for launching aircraft-like unmanned aerial vehicles. This was reported by The War Zone based on recent photographs from the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai.

Previously, this vessel was used as an "arsenal ship," housing about 60 container launch systems for missiles, radar systems, and close-in defense systems. Within a few days, the ship underwent modifications: some containers were dismantled, freeing up space for the catapult installation and drones.

According to sources, 24 of the original 60 vertical launch cells remain on board. At the same time, the ship has retained the 30mm Type 1130 close-in weapon system, as well as radar stations and other detection and communication systems in container format. This provides the vessel, at least formally, with a capability for self-defense.

The catapult is a modular system consisting of four vehicles connected into a single launch platform. One of the modules is already ready to launch a drone, while another drone is on the deck behind it. The length of the catapult can be adjusted depending on the type of the launched device and the available space, giving the system mobility and adaptability.

Nearby, stealthy combat drones with large wingspans resembling "loitering munitions" were also spotted. Some of them may be prototypes; however, the overall concept of the vessel indicates an exploration of methods for maritime basing of unmanned aviation.
