The prosecution claims that in December 2024, President Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law in the country without any signs of war, which is considered an attempt at a coup aimed at undermining the state system. This information is reported by BBC News, citing the "Yonhap" agency.

According to Yoon Suk-yeol, the declaration of martial law was necessary to protect the republic from the "anti-state" opposition, which he believed was obstructing the government's work. However, just a few hours after the announcement, martial law was lifted. Later, parliament, after several attempts, managed to impeach the president, but only the Constitutional Court was able to finally remove him from office.

Yoon Suk-yeol did not admit his guilt in the coup, and his wife was also arrested. This failed coup attempt led to a serious political crisis in South Korea.

In the early presidential elections held in the summer of 2025, the candidate from the opposition Democratic Party, Lee Jae-myung, won.
