Former President Yoon Suk Yeol may face the death penalty or life imprisonment in connection with his failed attempt to impose martial law in the country in 2024. Additionally, he has been charged with several criminal offenses, including obstructing the execution of an arrest warrant and abuse of power.

According to Reuters, the special prosecutor claims that Yoon, along with Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun, began developing a plan to suspend the parliament and seize legislative powers as early as October 2023.

The prosecution also accuses Yoon of attempting to discredit his opponents, including opposition leader Lee Jae Myung, labeling them as "anti-state forces" and detaining them.

The prosecution alleges that Yoon and Kim tried to create a pretext for imposing martial law by escalating tensions with North Korea through a covert drone operation.

However, 65-year-old Yoon Suk Yeol denies all the charges against him.

So far, the parties have already begun arguments in the case. A court decision is expected to be issued in February, exactly one year after the president's impeachment and his removal from office by the Constitutional Court.

It is important to note that death sentences have not been carried out in South Korea since 1997, although the death penalty itself has not been abolished in the country.
