The company OpenAI has announced a new update for ChatGPT that will allow it to determine the age of users in order to identify minors. According to the press release, this feature will be implemented in consumer subscription plans.
“Our goal is to implement an age prediction feature to identify users under 18 and ensure they have a safe and appropriate experience interacting with the service,” the company's statement said.
To determine age, ChatGPT uses a model that analyzes a combination of behavioral data, including account age, typical usage time of the service, and the age specified by the user.
OpenAI also adds that users who have been mistakenly classified as minors will be able to regain full access to ChatGPT by verifying their age through a photograph using the Persona identity verification service.
In September, Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, stated that the company intends to improve user privacy and enhance the protection of minors when using ChatGPT. Among the measures announced was the new age determination feature.
ChatGPT has become very popular since its launch in late November 2022, when it gathered its first million users in less than a week. One of the co-founders of OpenAI in 2015 was billionaire Elon Musk, who later ceased his collaboration with the project.
