The city authorities of Almaty announced the completion of the development of the feasibility study (FS) for the first line of light rail transport (LRT). The construction of this important project, discussed for two decades, will begin in 2027, with completion scheduled for 2029. The double-track route, stretching 18.3 km, will connect the remote neighborhoods of the Alatau district with the city center and the "Almaty-2" railway station.
According to the approved route, the line will run along the streets of Bauyrzhan Momyshuly and Tole Bi, with the final stop being the transport interchange hub "Rayymbek Batyr." Along the route, it is planned to install 34 stop platforms. The railway track will mainly run through the central part of the roads, which will require significant modernization of engineering communications and changes to the roadway configuration.
The history of the LRT project implementation in Almaty spans several decades. In 2019, the project was nearly realized, but its execution was then suspended due to high costs. In March of last year, the akimat began developing a new feasibility study, and now the documentation is ready for submission for state examination. In the future, the new LRT line will become part of the integrated transport system of the metropolis, connecting the metro, bus routes, and suburban lines.
