By the end of 2026, the European Union will complete the import of liquefied natural gas from Russia, and pipeline gas will cease to flow to the countries of the bloc by September 30, 2027. This decision, as reported on the EU Council's website, makes the rejection of Russian gas "legally binding" for all member states.

Despite this, objections to the ban have come from Slovakia and Hungary. Nevertheless, a majority of votes was sufficient to adopt this decision. Hungary plans to challenge this decision in the European Court.

Before the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the share of Russian gas in EU imports exceeded 40 percent. By 2025, this figure had decreased to 13 percent.
