Mobile phones may be completely banned in schools in Kazakhstan — even during breaks

In Kazakhstan, the possibility of a complete ban on the use of mobile phones in schools is being considered, reports Ulysmedia.kz.

The proposed amendments to the bill concerning the education sector and the status of teachers are currently under discussion in the Mazhilis. The new ban will apply not only during lessons but also during breaks, meaning that students will be prohibited from using mobile devices throughout the entire school day.

Exceptions will only be allowed in cases defined by the authorized body in the field of education. The current version of the law permits the use of phones for educational purposes if it is included in the lesson plan.

However, in the new version, such exceptions are abolished, and the rules will be developed and approved by the relevant ministry.

The authors of this initiative believe that strict measures to impose a ban will help reduce the number of cases of cyberbullying, limit access to undesirable content, and improve discipline among students. They also argue that this will enhance the level of face-to-face communication among students and create a more comfortable atmosphere in educational institutions.
