According to a study conducted by scientists from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Veronica's use of a stick is a unique phenomenon for cows. An article about her was published in the international journal Current Biology. Zoologists emphasize that this ability is significant, as similar behavior had previously only been observed in chimpanzees.
In 70 experiments with Veronica, the scientists found that she successfully completed tasks using the stick, including using a long-handled brush to scratch her back.
“We have no reason to believe that cows are stupid creatures. Veronica is not an Einstein among her kind, but her characteristics are related to the fact that she lives as a pet, rather than on a farm for milk or meat production,” noted study co-author Alice Auer-Sperg. “She has had many different activities and objects to interact with, which has certainly influenced her development.”
