At the meeting of the committee of the Jogorku Kenesh held on February 9, Bakyt Torobaev, who is the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, announced that irrigation water will be provided to farmers using electronic meters this year.

According to the minister, there are 498 reservoirs in Kyrgyzstan with a design capacity of 1 billion 757 million cubic meters. Currently, they contain 884 million cubic meters of water, which is 30-35% less compared to the data from 2025.

Torobaev noted that in the spring period, it is planned to sow 1 million 850 thousand hectares of land. To ensure irrigation for 885 thousand hectares of irrigated land, 6 billion 300 million cubic meters of water will be required, and it is also planned to add 139 irrigation facilities.

“Starting from 2026, farmers will be able to receive water through electronic meters. We plan to install 1,500 such devices,” he emphasized.

Additionally, he added that drip irrigation will be implemented on 20 thousand hectares, of which about 6 hectares will be funded by the state, while the rest will be covered by farmers.

Torobaev also noted that to obtain one hectare of wheat, 1,200 cubic meters of water is required; otherwise, the yield may decrease. “Farmers themselves expressed a desire to work based on volumes,” he concluded.
