The studio Universal Pictures has announced the start of work on the fourth installment of the "Mummy" franchise. Active negotiations are underway with actors Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz regarding the possibility of their return to the project. This is reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

If the parties reach an agreement, the famous actors will once again portray their characters from the original trilogy created by Stephen Sommers.

So far, Universal has not revealed either the premiere date or the title of the film, but fans are already eagerly calling it "Mummy 4," believing it to be a continuation of the story that began in 1999.

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz first starred in the 1999 film and then again in the sequel "The Mummy Returns," which was released in 2001. In the third installment, "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," released in 2008, Weisz did not participate, making her return particularly anticipated by fans.

The new film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, with the script written by David Koepp. The production team includes Sean Daniel, William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Nainstein.

The "Mummy" franchise is a well-known project of Universal Pictures in the adventure horror genre, based on legends about ancient Egyptian priests. The main plot tells the story of a group of archaeologists who accidentally awaken a mummy that is under a deadly curse. The series includes the classic 1932 film, the successful trilogy with Brendan Fraser that ran from 1999 to 2008, and the 2017 remake.
