In a recent report by the international non-governmental organization Freedom House, Kyrgyzstan has once again found itself among countries with limited freedoms. This is reflected in the annual ranking "Freedom in the World - 2026."

According to the report, the level of freedom in Kyrgyzstan is rated at 25 points out of a possible 100, with political rights assessed at 4 points out of 40, and civil liberties at 21 points out of 60.

Compared to neighboring countries, Kazakhstan received 23 points, Uzbekistan - 12, Tajikistan - 5, while Armenia leads the region with 54 points, Russia scored 12, and Belarus - 7.

At the top of the ranking with a maximum of 100 points is Finland, followed by New Zealand, Norway, and Sweden, each with 99 points.

In a global context, the 2026 report highlights a deterioration in the situation regarding freedoms worldwide over the past twenty years. Authoritarian regimes are strengthening their positions, allowing them to revise international orders. Freedom House experts urge countries to engage in more active cooperation and to reconsider methods of supporting democracy, especially in light of the decreasing international funding for such initiatives observed in 2025.

The authors of the study also warn that the weakening of democratic leadership on the international stage could lead to increased instability and conflicts. If international institutions continue to lose influence, this could facilitate the spread of authoritarian governance models, negatively impacting the security and economic interests of democratic countries.
