Of the total number of cases, 227 involved fractures, while the remaining 68 cases were related to bruises and sprains. All patients with fractures were given a plaster cast.
Medical experts emphasize that the main cause of injuries is falls on slippery surfaces, such as sidewalks, stairs, and pedestrian crossings. Therefore, citizens are strongly advised to exercise increased caution in icy conditions.
Recommendations from the Ministry of Health
- Do not rush and avoid sudden movements when moving on slippery surfaces. Be mindful of where you place your feet, and if necessary, stop and look around. Keep your knees slightly bent and lean your body slightly forward. Keeping your hands in your pockets may reduce your stability in case of a fall, so it is better to keep them free. Elderly people are advised to use a cane with a rubber tip.
- Whenever possible, try to move away from the road and avoid being close to building walls where icicles may form. Be especially cautious when crossing the street and only cross at pedestrian crossings.
- Steps and staircases pose a significant danger in winter. When descending a slippery staircase, place your foot along the step to minimize the consequences in case of losing your balance.
- Choose winter footwear that is comfortable and has good traction. To improve grip, you can stick adhesive tape or insulation tape crosswise or in a "ladder" pattern on the sole, as well as slightly sand the sole with sandpaper.
- If you cannot avoid a fall, try to crouch to reduce the height of the fall. In the event of an inevitable fall, curl up: tuck your elbows to your sides, pull your head into your shoulders, and tense your muscles. Try to avoid falling on your back and extending your arms forward. Rolling upon contact with the ground will help reduce the impact force and the risk of serious injury.
