Edil Baisalov: The Time Has Come, the UN Should Be Led by a Woman

The Deputy Prime Minister expressed his ideas at the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women

At the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women held in New York, the Deputy Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan, Edil Baisalov, proposed that a woman be elected as the Secretary-General of the UN.

In his speech, he emphasized that Kyrgyzstan actively supports the ideas of gender equality, the protection of the rights of women and girls, and fulfills its commitments arising from the Beijing Declaration, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Baisalov noted: "Kyrgyzstan is implementing a consistent strategy aimed at strengthening the rule of law, expanding economic opportunities for women, and combating violence against them. We adhere to the principle of zero tolerance for such crimes and continue to improve legislative and protective mechanisms."

He also added that the world cannot seriously discuss women's rights while ignoring the suffering of women in conflict zones. "The protection of women's rights must become a fundamental element of international security. The UN should set an example in matters of equality. After nearly eighty years of this organization's existence, it is time for a woman to lead it," concluded Edil Baisalov.
