Spain extradited to Kazakhstan a former customs officer who escaped three years ago

The General Prosecutor's Office of Kazakhstan reported that Spain has extradited a former Customs Service employee who had been hiding from justice for three years.

The suspect is accused of abuse of official powers and forgery of documents. Information from the press release clarifies that he was extradited from Spain after being placed on an international wanted list.

In 2020, while working at the customs, he entered knowingly false information into the information system, which allowed the owners of eight vehicles to be exempted from paying customs duties. The total amount of damage exceeded 45 million tenge.

After a long period of evading criminal prosecution, he was detained in Spain at the request of Interpol from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan.

Currently, the former customs employee is in a detention center in Astana.

For the crimes charged against him, he faces a sentence of up to seven years in prison, as well as confiscation of property and a lifetime ban on holding certain positions or engaging in certain activities.
