The central theme of the event was "Armonia" (Harmony).
During the ceremony, after the parade of participants, speeches were made by the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, and the President of the International Olympic Committee, Kirsty Coventry. The Olympic flame was lit in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.
