Sergio Mattarella, the President of Italy, has called on the global community to uphold the Olympic truce in light of the upcoming Winter Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, which will begin on February 6. He noted that sport is an important tool capable of countering violence, as reported by local media, particularly ANSA.

In his address, Mattarella emphasized that sport represents a unique form of interaction that can connect nations despite political disagreements. He expressed hope that the "unarmed force of sport" could silence weapons at least for the duration of the competitions.

The call for adherence to the truce has become a key diplomatic message from Italy, which is hosting the Olympics this year. The Games will last until February 22, and the Italian authorities hope that this period will be a time for global de-escalation.

The President also expressed the view that Olympic ideals should serve as the foundation for international dialogue, demonstrating that sporting rivalry transcends armed conflicts.
