In September 2025, jurors found the 59-year-old Ruth guilty on all counts, including attempted murder. After the verdict was announced, he attempted to harm himself by stabbing his neck with a pen, but was stopped by court officers.

The prosecution claimed that Ruth attempted to kill Trump with a sniper rifle on September 15, 2024, while he was at a golf club in Palm Beach, Florida. The rifle was spotted by one of the Secret Service agents, after which Ruth was apprehended on the spot, unable to harm Trump.

Ruth himself did not plead guilty and acted as his own defense during the trial.

In 2024, there were two assassination attempts on Donald Trump. The first occurred on July 13 at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, when several shots were fired at Trump, one of which grazed his ear. The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was neutralized by a Secret Service sniper. The second attempt, as established by the investigation, was carried out by Ryan Ruth.
