45-year-old Tetsuya Yamagami, who admitted his guilt in the murder using a homemade weapon, received this punishment at the request of the prosecution. The defense insisted on a lighter sentence of 20 years in prison.
The incident occurred on July 9, 2022, when Shinzo Abe was giving a speech in support of his Liberal Democratic Party ahead of the upper house parliamentary elections. During the speech, two shots were fired, after which the politician fell, clutching his chest.
