In his account on the social network Truth Social, Trump noted that during his first presidential term, he significantly updated the U.S. armed forces by implementing new and modernized nuclear systems.
“I prevented nuclear conflicts in various regions, such as Pakistan and India, Iran and Israel, as well as between Russia and Ukraine. Instead of extending New START (which was poorly signed by the U.S. and is largely being violated), we need to instruct our nuclear experts to develop a new, improved, and long-term treaty,” Trump emphasized.
The New START treaty was signed on April 8, 2010, between Russia and the U.S. and came into force on February 5, 2011. In February 2021, it was extended for five years. Recently, the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed the expiration of the agreement.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres characterized this situation as “a difficult period for international security” and called on the parties to immediately begin negotiations on a new mechanism for nuclear arms control.
