In his speech, Guterres once again emphasized his concern about the brutal repression in Iran.
Speaking about current challenges, Guterres pointed to "self-destructive geopolitical divides and egregious violations of international law" that are tearing the world apart. He highlighted the importance of international cooperation at this critical time, adding that "some are seeking to doom it to failure."
The Secretary-General also criticized "radical cuts to development and humanitarian funding," which he believes are linked to budget cuts made by the U.S. during Donald Trump's presidency under the "America First" policy.
“These circumstances undermine the foundations of global cooperation and challenge the multilateral system,” Guterres stated at the General Assembly meeting. “At a time when international engagement is needed most, we seem least prepared to implement and invest in it.”
Guterres also noted the UN's commitment to peace in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and other regions, emphasizing the organization's efforts to deliver vital assistance to those in need.
These three protracted conflicts have become hallmark events during Guterres' leadership at the UN, provoking criticism regarding the organization's ineffectiveness in preventing and resolving these issues.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has repeatedly questioned the significance of the UN and its priorities. The Security Council, which is the highest decision-making body in the UN, is experiencing paralysis due to tensions between the U.S., Russia, and China, which hold veto power.
“As we gather here, millions of people continue to suffer from conflict, violence, hunger, and forced displacement,” Guterres summarized.
Speaking about the situation in Gaza, he called for ensuring a "unimpeded flow" of humanitarian aid, and regarding Ukraine, he noted the necessity to do everything possible to cease hostilities.
Additionally, he advocated for the resumption of negotiations to achieve a sustainable peace agreement in Sudan.
Guterres also raised the issue of the need for action against the abuse of artificial intelligence and the fight against inequality.
