An emergency meeting of the UN Security Council was held to discuss the current situation in Venezuela. The speech by Secretary-General António Guterres was delivered by his deputy Rosemary DiCarlo.

The Secretary-General expressed serious concern about the potential escalation of instability in the country, as well as the possible negative impact on the region and the precedent that may arise in international relations.

During the discussion, it was emphasized that all countries must strictly adhere to international law, including the UN Charter, which serves as the foundation for maintaining peace and security at a global level.

It was noted that the military actions that occurred on January 3 did not comply with international law norms. The UN Charter prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any country.

Guterres called on all parties in Venezuela to engage in a broad democratic dialogue that would allow society to determine its future. This, he said, should include full respect for human rights, the rule of law, and the sovereign will of the people of Venezuela.

He also urged neighboring countries of Venezuela and the international community to act in a spirit of solidarity and to follow principles that promote peaceful coexistence.

"It is essential that the rule of law prevails. International law provides tools to address issues such as drug trafficking, resource disputes, and human rights violations. This is the path that should be chosen," he added.

It should be noted that on the night of January 3, explosions were heard in Caracas. It soon became known that the US Air Force conducted a special operation, resulting in the capture of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, who were forcibly taken out of the country and placed in one of the prisons in New York.

Nicolás Maduro has been charged with leading the criminal organization Cartel de los Soles, which has been designated as a terrorist organization in the US, as well as conspiring with Colombian drug cartels along with his wife, son, and close associates.

Additionally, he is accused of trafficking Venezuelan diplomatic passports, providing diplomatic cover for drug trafficking, and using criminal gangs to eliminate competitors.
