On the evening of January 4, Kaja Kallas, representing the European Union, called for respect for the sovereignty of Venezuela and expressed support for a peaceful transition to democracy after the U.S. seized Nicolás Maduro. This was reported in an official statement published, as informed by DW.

Kallas emphasized the importance of adhering to international law, pointing out the special role of the U.S. as a permanent member of the UN Security Council in this context.

The document also notes that the EU considers it necessary to combat transnational organized crime and the illegal drug trade, but only "with full respect for the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty."
