As of January 1, 2026, Moscow has assumed the role of chair in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). In this regard, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Sergey Lavrov, made a statement outlining the main areas of work during the chairmanship.

Lavrov emphasized that Russia will act under the slogan "Collective Security in a Multipolar World: A Common Goal, Shared Responsibility." He noted that the CSTO member states plan to unite efforts to protect common principles of ensuring international security.

In his speech, the minister highlighted that the activities of the CSTO are based on the principles of peaceful coexistence, the priority of political and diplomatic solutions in conflicts, and adherence to international law, with the UN playing a key role. Russia proposes to its partners to develop mutually beneficial cooperation and jointly shape the architecture of common and indivisible security in the Eurasian space, viewing the CSTO as one of the pillars of this system.

Lavrov noted that the organization has established itself as an authoritative association of allied states, and its activities are not directed against third countries. All decisions within the CSTO are made based on consensus, taking into account the balance of interests, mutual respect, and good neighborliness.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia also emphasized that the country plans to maintain continuity in the development of key areas of cooperation and continue implementing the initiatives that were developed during Kyrgyzstan's chairmanship. In the context of geopolitical tension, Moscow seeks further consolidation of CSTO member states and strengthening allied ties.

An important aspect of the chairmanship will be the fulfillment of the CSTO's main mission, which is to maintain peace and stability in the organization's area of responsibility, as well as to create conditions for the safe and sustainable development of the member states.
Lavrov stressed that Russia will not allow destabilization and "chaos" on the territory of the organization.
One of the priorities will be the development of the military component of the CSTO, including increasing the combat potential of the Collective Forces and equipping them with modern and compatible technologies that take into account the experience of recent armed conflicts. Attention will also be paid to cooperation in the field of protection against biological threats, information security, and the development of defense-industrial complexes of the member states.

In addition, Russia plans to expand the capabilities for joint counteraction to international terrorism, extremism, the illegal drug and arms trade, as well as transnational crime and illegal migration.
In his address, Lavrov also emphasized the importance of inter-parliamentary interaction. In 2026, it will be the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly, which, according to him, plays a significant role in forming a unified legal space for the organization.
The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed confidence in the support from CSTO partners and readiness for close cooperation throughout 2026, noting that joint efforts can elevate interaction within the organization to a new level.

Let us remind you that in 2025, the chairmanship of the CSTO was held by Kyrgyzstan.
